292 Design Group is working with the City of Alexandria on the design of an expansion to the City’s Runestone Community Center (RCC). The RCC is a central gathering place for West Central Minnesota, drawing people from across the state for ice and dry-floor events. Continued growth in programming led to the consideration of a facility expansion. Previous studies and assessments determined the need for improvements beyond the substantial investments made by the City–ice plant system improvements, finish upgrades, new lighting, and an ice cover for greater flexibility. Due to the current and anticipated needs, the project was selected for funding in the 2020 bonding bill. Phase One of the project includes an update to the existing predesign documents; Phase Two includes design and construction administration for concepts identified in the updated predesign.
Currently in Phase One, the proposed expansion includes the addition of a new 600-seat ice arena that can be converted to dry floor space for events such as trade shows, commencements, or concerts; a remodel of the existing locker rooms; and renovation of the entry and lobby space.
