The Excelsior Public Library, part of the Hennepin County Library System, is the result of a multi-year effort in building evaluation, site selection, community engagement, design, and construction. The resulting facility accommodates an expanded book and media collection and a variety of community space such as a collaborative study area for teens and an interactive, early-literacy area for children and families.
The design of the library is a response to its location and program. The library is located in Excelsior’s historic downtown, and the community was committed to expressing this context in the new library building design. An historic preservation architect, in consultation with the library advisory committee and the Excelsior Heritage Preservation Committee, guided development of the building exterior. The interior of the building, however, reflected the desire for increased natural light and visual connection between interior spaces. The subsequent interior design includes bright, contemporary spaces that accommodate a greater variety of library spaces and functions.
